Class Activities:
My classes will be memorizing the parts of speech poem this year. This poem will help
with understanding grammar instruction.
Memorizing this poem may result in bonus points in class or on certain assignments!
Plus ... we are going to be able to memorize before Ms. Jordan's and Mrs. McDonnell's classes!!
Reading Logs:(click on link if you need another copy!)
Each month students are required to read a total of 400 minutes outside of class. Reading
logs need to be signed by a parent and turned in on the due date each month.
Reading logs will be 50 points each month. Students may be required to write a summary in class
of what was read that month. Missing a signature will result in -15 points. Each day a reading log
is late, it will result in -10 points. If a reading log is a week late, it will not be counted.
Organizers:
Each day students are required to write their assignments in their organizers for each core
class. Organizers will be checked in each week by one of the core team teachers.
Writing Notebooks:
Each student will receive a notebook at the beginning of the year. Notebooks stay in the room
at all times. Writing assignments will be given out occasionally, and will be posted on the
board. Students will complete their writing in this notebook, which will be checked for credit.
LA Binders:
Each student will receive a binder to keep important handouts and work in. Binders must
stay in the room at all times. Binders will be divided into the following five sections:
1) data, 2) grammar, 3) reading, 4) writing, and 5) notes. Certain pages in binders will
be checked at the end of the nine weeks for a grade.
Book Projects:
There will be four book projects during the year. Instruction sheets will be passed out in
class and will also be located in the project section of the web site. Students will be able
to go to the library to check out books, or check them out from the classroom library.
Homework Folders:
Students are required to bring an orange homework folder to class each day. Only classroom
homework goes into the homework folder. Your folder will travel from class to home. Reading
logs also belong in your homework folder. These will NOT stay in the room!
Vocabulary Assignments:
Each week students will be given a vocabulary handout to complete. Vocabulary handouts
include context clues, synonyms, antonyms, and analogies, all of which the students will be
tested over on the OAT. Vocabulary handouts will be handed out each Monday and are
due on Wednesday's. Vocabulary is worth 20 points each week.
Students may also be quizzed on various vocabulary topics (prefixes, suffixes, Greek/Latin roots).
Students may also receive checkbook money for turning them in on time, each week.
